Thanks for the link to the LIA post. I have long thought 'Jerry's Record Collection' would be a great blog post (not by me, but you know, someone.. competent).
Who doubts his wooden crate full of disks underneath his turntable just had to be terrific? The way he whipped out a Dolly Parton album in 1970 for a visiting journalist? C'Mon. Obscure disks, eclectic sourcing..

Yet nobody ever asked about the tunes. That's my favorite Garcia interview that never happened. "Talk about Louis Collins." Or, "I've Been All Around This World." "Catfish John."
There's a lot of tunes out there. What prompted him to perform the ones he (they) did? He could talk about the tune itself, why he chose to perform it, what he liked about performing it, where he got the old record he first heard it on. Gooood stuff. His lone comment about John Hurt in the '85 interview mentioned teases what could have been.

Loved also the observation how the characters in his songs spoke often of prisons and executions. Guns too. He left out guns. 'Duprees Diamond Blues,' 'IBAATW,' 'Little Sadie,' his own 'Candyman,' on and on.
In particular, what I've always cherished is how his characters often have no interest in debating their relative guilt- they readily cop to it. And there's complete indifference to looming penalties, harsh as they often were. The character tells the judge in Dupree's that the proposed execution 'sounds about right.' Better yet, in IBAATW the character sez the hanging sentence is no big deal he just doesn't want to wait around in prison for it to happen!

Now those are songs with a freakin' point of view. A pure coincidence our hero checked out so early, or was he singing about it for years? https://archive.org/details/GratefulDeadCoverSongDebuts66-95/gd70-07-11d1t09.mp3 This post was modified by Reade on 2020-02-16 17:55:59

I asked The Answer Man.
He didn't know either.

Both. Coincidence and the mind drives the bus. So you go where you are looking. Soft Shoulder
For Jerry, he just crapped out when he did, not early, not late, just on time, his time. I guess he wanted to live as long as he could, yet knew "It happens to everyone".

Judge says 'Son, I know, your baby well."

I have told many people that beautiful scary verse when talking about courts.

"I wouldn't mind your hanging, Lord
But you wait in jail too long
Lord, Lord. ….."
